Mouth Cancer Screening

We love to create beautiful results in dental treatments both to improve your smile and give you self-confidence.

What Is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer (mouth cancer screening) is defined by abnormal cell division, which can, in turn, cause lumps, bumps, and discolouration to otherwise healthy tissues.

Most people have heard of commonly occurring cancers such as breast cancer and lung cancer. However, these abnormal cells can appear in any part of the body. VICI Dental provides regular screenings to all of our patients, throughout Leeds and the wider area, as a normal part of your dental journey with us.

What Can Cause Oral Cancer?

Numerous risk factors can affect the likelihood of developing oral cancer. The leading causes are the combination of consuming tobacco products and alcohol, as well as STI’s such as HPV (human papillomavirus). Overexposure to sunlight is also a factor in cancerous cells developing on the lips.

What Happens During A Mouth Cancer Screening?

Your dentist will complete screening as part of your routine dental check-up appointments. The process itself is comfortable and uncomplicated. Your dentist will take care in feeling the glands underneath your chin and around the neck for any swelling, and they will inspect your mouth for signs of abnormality. The team will be looking for lumps, ulcers, and white patches that are not easily removed.

If you notice recent changes or ulcers that won’t heal, contact your dentist.

Prevention Of Mouth Cancer

Making some simple lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of mouth cancer. These include the following.

Mouth Cancer Screening FAQs

During a mouth cancer screening, your dentist will perform a thorough examination of the inside of your mouth. Usually, they’re looking out for any tell-tale signs that there could be something wrong, which include:

  • Red or white patches
  • Mouth sores
  • Changes in texture
  • Checking the tongue for changes in colour, texture, symmetry and mobility

Unlike some types of cancer, oral cancer can be difficult to detect by yourself, especially when it’s in the early stages. It can develop in pretty much any part of the mouth, including the tongue, lips, the inner lining of the cheeks, gums, and hard or soft palate, which is why seeing a professional dentist for a mouth cancer screening is so important.

Although the NHS will call patients in the UK for routine screenings, oral cancer screening is not part of this. There are currently no standard screening tests for this type of cancer, which is why it’s our job to explain just how important it is as part of your oral health.
